This is unlikely and I expect Aryna Sabalenka will win in commanding fashion.

Meanwhile Jessica Pegula has come through five matches without looking like losing even one set. The repeat of last year's final looks likely to be as close if not the American's best chance of victory at a slam against the world #1:) At 5/2 DTM recommends a 3 set outcome and an American win.

DTM recommends

J.Pegula to beat A.Sabalenka @ 5/2

Match to be a 3 set outcome @ 11/8

A.Anisimova to beat N.Osaka

Finals approach

US Open Last 16

Jessica Pegula has breezed through her section of the draw. She is calm dismissing each opponent in straight sets. She looks like she fancies the job at this event and will be very fresh and far too strong for Barbora Krejcikova who has played some long matches to date. Her race is run and DTM expects another straight sets win for the American :) Aryna Sabalenka has not been at her best whilst Marketa Vondrousova has been on top form. A 3 set match looks entirely possible. DTM would love to think Vondrousova can back up her win against Rybakina again but she simply isn't someone you can rely on as her defeat to Raducanu evidenced at Wimbledon after winning in Berlin on grass just before, including her victory over Sabalenka.

DTM recommends

J.Pegula to beat B.Krejcikova

Sabalenka v Vondrousova to be a 3 set match VOID

Naomi Osaka is playing better tennis than Gauff. If you also factor in her service woes, then Osaka would seemingly never have a better chance to win a big match at a slam against a star name:) Osaka at the odds is the play here especially as she is 70:30 favourite yet the odds suggest the other way round?

The other play if you have Iga Swiatek to win the event is to recognise that Alexandrova is the only real danger left in the bottom half. Without a huge extra investment you can back the Russian to win and or each way to cover that original investment:) Iga may still win but she's definitely vulnerable against the Russian having lost to her on hard court in Miami last season:)

DTM recommends

N.Osaka to beat C.Gauff

E.Alexandrova to beat I.Swiatek

It is hard to see any other result than an Anna win :) Anastasia Zakharova is hungry and rising the rankings quickly. For most of this season Krejcikova has been either out of action or out of form. However her win against Mboko will have given her a huge lift. Given Uchijima hadn't won a match for most of the season until this week means her confidence will be in a very different place. She got over the line in a final set tie break on Sunday. The Czech is a strong favourite to progress to the last 32:)

Jess Pegula will beat Anna Blinkova although the odds will reflect that. Elise Mertens does well against lower ranked players and she should have too much experience for Sun. The most vulnerable to a shock is Jelena Ostapenko who has a tough match against Taylor Townsend. But its not a match to invest in as both players could do anything on any given day :)

DTM recommends

B.Krejcikova to beat M.Uchijima

J.Pegula to beat A.Blinkova

E.Mertens to beat L.Sun

There are a few more interesting first round match ups between some in form players that have caught DTM's interest. Eva Lys is trending up the rankings and she certainly loves the hard courts, having got to the 4th round in a slam already in her short career. Her form on hard courts and at grand slam level is simply superior to that of Fran Jones. A very gutsy player but not at the same level as Eva Lys. Priscilla Hon is playing well and she will take care of Jeanjean. DTM watched her push Alexandrova at Wimbledon and her level is higher than the French player on this surface. Finally Kessler in the USA is a different proposition. She has beaten Magda Linette already and so Vondrousova will have to be on very good form. The value is the American who at 13/8 is very tempting:)

DTM recommends

E.Lys to beat F.Jones

E.Lys to win 2 sets to 0

P.Hon to beat L.Jeanjean

M.Kessler to beat M.Vondrousova

After the draw was made there are several first round matches which have matched up one out of form player with an opponent who is playing well. This is always a good starting point for finding winners. Elina Avanesyan has hardly played in recent months and is also not in any kind of form. She prefers clay courts so will not relish a faster hard court surface. In Australia her ranking will mean she has to qualify. Her opponent is in form and has just reached the semi finals in Cleveland. Anastasia Zakharova has some good wins to her name this season and is on the rise. She is an excellent option to win here:)

Victoria Mboko will be riding high after her win in Montreal. She will fancy the job against an injury hit Barbora Krejcikova. Diana Shnaider is playing well again and after her good run in Monterrey she will be far too good for Laura Siegemund. Sorana Cirstea is having an Indian summer with her form and career. She loves the hard courts and her wins in Cleveland have underlined her pedigree. She will dominate her match with Solana Sierra. Finally Yulia Putintseva will surely struggle against Elisabetta Cocciaretto having only won one tour match for months and that was against a junior. Back the Italian here :)

DTM recommends

A.Zakharova to beat E.Avanesyan

V.Mboko to beat B.Krejcikova

D.Shnaider to beat L.Siegemund

S.Cirstea to beat S.Sierra

E.Cocciaretto to beat Y.Putintseva

In the bottom half Iga will have to negotiate Anna Kalinskaya in round 3, Ekaterina Alexandrova in round 4, Anisimova/Svitolina in the quarter finals and either Gauff/Osaka/Keys in the semi final. However none of these players are in the same form as those names highlighted above. Iga Swiatek will be a strong favourite to make the final and if she does get to that match we all know her record then:)

DTM has written his latest blog on the players most likely to take the title in Flushing Meadow in a few weeks time:) The top half is wide open with a list of about 8 players who could make it through to the final. Elena Rybakina and Emma Raducanu are the most likely opponent for Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter final. However in order to make it that far Sabalenka has to overcome Leylah Fernandez in round 3 and Clara Tauson in round 4. It's a very tough section:) Mirra Andreeva or Victoria Mboko will fancy their section to reach at least the semi finals. Jessica Pegula will hope to repeat last year's run and will try to upset the youngsters in this second quarter of the draw.

The third section sees Keys, Osaka and Gauff as the stand out names. But others who could have a say include Noskova, Kostyuk and Muchova. Finally Iga Swiatek will hope to continue her form by overcoming Amanda Anisimova or Elina Svitolina. Overall the sensible choice is Iga Swiatek. Each way options are best taken from the top half. Rybakina and Andreeva are the two players most likely to upset Aryna Sabalenka's chances.

DTM recommends

Iga Świątek to win @ 3/1

E.Rybakina each way @ 11/1

E.Rybakina to win her quarter @ 3/1

Mirra Andreeva to win her quarter @ 11/5

Britain's Fran Jones heads up the seeds for this year's Open qualifying. Players need to win three matches to make it through to the main draw on Sunday. It's a tough call especially for players like Viktoriya Tomova who has been use to direct entry for a while and now finds herself seeded 5 to try and make it through qualifying this week.
