China hosted several big WTA 1000 events this Autumn. The China Open in Beijing at the end of September saw Coco Gauff return to victory with an impressive event from start to finish. Her dominant perform once in the final against a resurgent Muchova was evidence that her change of coach was indeed the right decision. A word for Tomljanovic who won the Hong Kong 125 event the same week. After a horrendous period of injury this was a welcome win for a once top 32 player :)
DTM had some notable successes with both Shuai Zhang who won 4 matches after a 603 day drought and Qinwen Zheng.
The Wuhan Open saw Aryna Sabalenka reward DTM followers with another WTA 1000 event win. Qinwen Zheng once again went deep in the event and rewarded DTM with a 3 set final. Linette gained an easy victory against Kasatkina which DTM headlined mid tournament to return a generous 7/4 singles victory. The Ningbo Open was won by Daria Kasatkina which was a surprising result. Not helped by the late retirements of both Paula Badosa and Karolina Muchova at the semi final stage. At that moment Muchova who was DTM's pick looked goof to win the event but her exit left the tournament wide open, hence the winner.
DTM's faith in Qinwen Zheng was rewarded in Tokyo as she came out victorious at the Pan Pacific Open. Good wins from Katie Boulter and Sofia Kenin during the week made this a very successful week for DTM followers. On Friday he predicted all four quarter final outcomes to complete a very successful week.
The final week of the Asian swing saw DTM concentrate his efforts in Hong Kong. With in form players moving across from Tokyo it was not surprising that DTM went with confident, in form players.
The US Open at the end of August is the last of the four majors This year. With two or three events played by most of the tour in USA & Canada following the Olympics, everyones‘ focus is back on hard courts.
The US Open completed another successful period of DTM picks. Both Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka duly won the last slam of the year. DTM picked these two out which was not particularly exciting but a winner is a winner :) Jessica Pegula was advised so each way backers will have returned on both investments. Paula Badosa reached the last 8 so again further profit for those who followed her individual match wins.
The highlight for Wimbledon 2024 was DTM tipping up Putintseva to beat Swiatek in round 3. At 6-1 this was a great return in a match up where the number one player was overrated on a surface she has yet to master. The remainder of the Women's singles was littered with withdrawals or injuries that made for an opening for two very unlikely finalists. Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini were not considered as potential Wimbledon champions at the outset of this tournament. Krejcikova had terrible form coming into the event and probably played her first round thinking she needed a win or two just to secure her top 32 ranking for a bit longer. Her win against Kudermetova was very nervy and tense. Her disbelief 11 days later in winning suggests that she never had it on her own radar rto win the event. Her injuries and illness has plagued her season but what a joy it was to see her victory and her genuine surprise and emotion. DTM sat with some of her team before her 1st round and they were concerned that she was low on confidence. She had been really poorly only a few months before so to achieve her second major was simply out of this world!
In the Men's championship the semi final between the two stars of the game didn't happen once again as Jannik Sinner succumbed to illness and inevitable defeat to Medvedev in the last 8. However DTM is absolutely convinced that a 100% Sinner is going to win several more majors very soon. Djokovic at 37 after a knee operation is simply not able to move as required to push a young firing Alcaraz. The final was his first real test and left Djokovic in no doubt. His time has passed. Nevertheless what a time it has been. Ultimately Carlos retained his title and it was in truth fairly comfortable.
In summary Wimbledon like many, many events leading up to it was plagued by injuries, retirements and withdrawals. This made predictions and pre tournament picks fairly futile. We look forward to a healthy tour and some events where the top players stay in for the duration :)
