Aryna Sabalenka's collapse in my opinion was down to forces beyond her control. It was such a u turn in her form that it simply doesn't make sense. Her press conference seemed more of a smoke screen and a distraction. Beating Shnaider should have been a formality from a double break up and a set up. At 30-0 up when serving for a 5-1 lead something changed which had nothing to do with her tennis ability or her tennis brain. I will leave it at that. The remainder of the event is going to be a case of which Russian wins? Hopefully Maja Chawlinska has something to say about that or even Marta Kostyuk but after today I somehow doubt it?

Anyone who saw Aryna Sabalenka beat Naomi Osaka will be left in no doubt that the world #1 wants this title very badly. Her level and intensity were on a different planet to her other recent clay events. Someone has to play an unbelievable match to challenge her at present. Her engine looked to be slowing down in her last match and it would be a surprise if her age didn't catch up with her against a determined Andreeva. The younger player can be expected to reach the semi final. The Ukrainian battle could go the distance ? It would be a surprise if Kostyuk lost easily to the experience of Svitolina after winning her last 16 matches in a row on clay. I suspect this match might go to 3 sets which is the safest option :)

M.Kostyuk v E.Svitolina - a 3 set outcome
M.Andreeva to beat S.Cirstea

She should use her experience to good effect when she meets the iconic Osaka tonight. Potapova against Kalinskaya is a very interesting battle between two big hitters who like to go for it. Anna Kalinskaya is the more talented player but Potapova is possibly more confident at present. DTM believes Kalinskaya is worth following here simply because she has nothing to lose and will enjoy the cooler conditions.
DTM recommends
A.Sabalenka to beat N.Osaka
A.Kalinskaya to beat A.Potapova

Marta Kostyuk is a very different player to this time last year. Her second serve is much improved and her movement is up there with the best. Iga Swiatek will have to be better than she was in her previous match to beat her. At the prices Kostyuk is the right choice. Unbeaten on clay and with all the momentum this match promises to be a defining one.
DTM recommends
M.Kostyuk to beat I.Swiatek

DTM suspects Iva Jovic is ready to claim the honours in Paris. Madison Keys is playing well again and will fancy the job against Mboko on her least favourite surface. Chwalinska is doing so well and has already beaten good players equivalent to Sakkari's ability. I suspect she will win again:)

I.Jovic to beat N.Osaka
M.Chwalinska to beat M.Sakkari
M.Keys to beat V.Mboko

Ann Li secured a seeded spot at the French Open for the first time. She is playing well and should reach the third round today. The same applies to Anna Kalinksaya and Victoria Mboko. Elsewhere the closest match on paper looks to be between Yulia Putintseva and Camila Osorio. DTM expects the tough Putintseva to edge this battle.

Only the Eala v Jovic match came up short. Round 2 sees some interesting clashes. Eva Lys is a player who is capable of playing really well. In her match against Cirstea in Australia she led by a set and a break before losing in 3 sets. This is a close match up and the odds are very generous for the German to cause an upset. Id be surprised if Cirstea plays as well this week as she did in Rome. It is always hard to back up a great week. Lys looks back to full fitness. HAs played doubles this week and easily defeated Marcinko who was in form. She is definitely worth considering at 3/1. Marta Kostyuk will be confident of further success given she remains unbeaten on clay this season.
DTM recommends
E.Lys to beat S.Cirstea
M.Kostyuk to beat K.Volynets

On Tuesday Aryna Sabalenka takes to the court against Bouzas Maneiro. This will be a nice warm up into the event. With conditions hard and fast under hot sun the world #1 has the perfect set up for this first week. Emma Navarro should easily account for Tjen as should Naomi Osaka on a day when the top players should all make round 2:)

A.Sabalenka to beat J.Bouzas Maneiro
E.Navarro to beat J.Tjen
N.Osaka to beat L.Siegemund

This should on stats be a comfortable win for the higher ranked player but I would not be surprised if Alex Eala won a set and pushed this match to a closer outcome than many expect. Her match against Rybakina stood up well in Rome so we will see. Personally I don't see why Lilli Tagger is such a strong favourite against Xinyu Wang. Even on clay this match up appears to be quite close. Wang is much more experienced and higher ranked. At the odds Wang is the value here. Diane Parry played some good matches in recent weeks and again is over priced to beat Kalinina who is not proven at the higher level in recent months. If Parry plays likes she did to win in Paris recently at the 125 event and like she did to beat Raducanu you have to say 12/5 is very generous. Finally Eva Lys has to be the play against Marcinko. This is a match Eva Lys will be prepared for. She has had enough time to get back her fitness now and she has come off some recent good matches including a tough 3 setter with Naomi Osaka. Marcinko is not at that level.
DTM recommends
X.Wang to beat L.Tagger
E.Lys to beat P.Marcinko
D.Parry to beat A.Kalinina

Who will follow Coco Gauff at this year's French Open. With so many players winning on clay in recent weeks it is a very hard call. Coco Gauff is potentially coming back to form and may put up a good defence. Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will both be desperate to transfer their winning form on faster surfaces to the clay. And Iga Swiatek is beginning to show signs of better form. Or could there be a new winner from outside the top 4 in the rankings? Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk will be high on the list for a possible outsider to win given their big wins in Rome and Madrid. DTM's blog previewing the French Open is well worth a read. Purely on the stats and the form of all the other top players at present on this surface it is very hard to look beyond the world #1 this year. She has all the motivation she needs. She is well rested. The tournament is really on her racket. If she plays as she can then she will win this year's French Open:) With the draw now out it appears Aryna Sabalenka will have to overcome Mboko and probably Gauff to reach the final once again. She will be very happy with her draw and looks good to reach the 4th round without issue. Naomi Osaka could await her here. In the bottom half anyone come come through a tough section. Elina Svitolina will be tough to beat in a section loaded with potential challengers to Aryna in the final. Sadly for all of them only one can make it through to the final. Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Svitolina and Kostyuk would all be hoping to make it there but only one can. Sabalenka has dodged a few bullets this time:)
DTM recommends
A.Sabalenka to win the title @ 3/1
Outsider to consider
E.Svitolina each way @ 20/1
V.Mboko each way @ 40/1
E.Svitolina to win her quarter @ 11/4

The French Open website is great for information about the venue and of course all the players and the various draws across singles and doubles. The second grand slam is always a wonderful occasion.
